Kev & Oscar

Roloki offered the Kennel Club Good Citizen course and this seemed a good place to start with my working Cocker Spaniel, Oscar. This course is based on good puppy socialisation that provides a strong foundation for basic obedience training.

The overall experience of taking part in a Roloki course is one of fun. It is obvious from the outset that Christine and Lucy enjoy what they do and approach dog/owner training with enthusiastic professionalism. Each session is planned in advance based on the abilities of the students (dogs and owners) with handouts at the end of each session outlining lessons learnt; these act as a training aid/reminder for self training before the next session.

Lessons take place inside a village hall and, weather permitting, on a sports field. This approach helps reinforce to the dog that expected good behaviour does not depend on environment. One of the main lessons learnt is that it is not the dog that is trained but the owner.

Oscar, although living life at 100 MPH, now has a set of brakes! He is well socialised and knows were the boundaries are. I have learnt that training a dog is far from something that happens instantly. Indeed, a gentle, structured and consistent approach is required. Now I have realised this (thanks Lucy) my own training sessions with Oscar have become a stress free experience. This situation would not have been possible without the help and guidance from Roloki.

Life with Oscar is wonderful. Although a strong willed dog he has integrated with us at home very well. On walks I can let him off knowing that he will come back to me when called and play well with other dogs that he meets. Around the house he waits to go through doors and does not beg for food; I could say that he has learnt some manners!

I came to puppy training for general obedience and to keep my dogs brain occupied with the following classes. I previously had a rescue dog and wanted to make sure my new puppy was better behaved and more sociable! She is also a Giant Breed so she had to learn manners and how to behave in public otherwise I would have had a big ball of chaos on the end of my lead.

Whilst my delightful puppy was going through her phases of being perfect one week and a terror the next any fuss she made in class was more than tolerated and immediate assistance and advice was given. When there were moments of embarrassment for myself I was quickly assured that everything she was doing was normal and that we all go through it.

I am really pleased to say that since training I have a dog that is a pleasure to live with and take out. She is pretty perfect on the lead which was one of my main requirements being as she is large. I would and do happily recommend these classes.
